US Letter—often written 8.5 × 11 in—measures 215.9 mm × 279.4 mm in metric conversions used by print drivers. It is the baseline for:

For printable templates, Letter is not just a convenient sheet. It defines the safe area for margins, hole punches, headers, and measured layouts. A grid or ruled page made for Letter should be printed on Letter stock when spacing matters.

Common misconceptions

“Notebook paper” is not automatically Letter—spiral notebooks sometimes trim slightly smaller printable areas even when they claim Letter stock.

Always trust the PDF page properties dialog, not the thumbnail preview alone.

“Fit to page” does not preserve Letter size. It may make the content fit inside the printable area, but it can shrink a measured template. Use actual size when graph squares, ruled spacing, or staff lines need to remain true.

Remote collaborators often send A4 PDFs while US offices stock Letter trays. Avoid “just printing anyway.” Either reflow the layout for Letter or convert deliberately with margin review. Shipping physical packets across borders? Ask recipients which tray they actually load; many European offices keep A4 primary with Letter as a specialty tray.

Hole punch and binder alignment

Three-ring templates assume standard Letter width. If your printable includes hole-punch margins, verify left gutters against the punch you use—spiral trimming and bindery services sometimes remove more edge than consumer punches, which can clip rule lines on ruled templates.

Duplex, ecology, and classroom volume

District duplex defaults save trees but flip homework templates differently per driver—proof short-edge vs long-edge once per lab so ruled lines stay on the same physical edge across spreads. High-volume classrooms should standardize one Letter PDF master per unit so volunteer copiers do not introduce alternate margins week to week.

Retail shrink-wrap drift

Measure random samples from big-box loose-leaf packs annually—mills occasionally shave millimetres to hit price points, which matters when grading templates assume exact Letter width.
