How to Print 8.5 x 11 Letter Paper at Actual Size
Keep an 8.5 x 11 Letter document at actual size by matching the PDF page box, printer tray, margins, and scaling settings.

US Letter is 8.5 x 11 inches, 21.59 x 27.94 cm, or 215.9 x 279.4 mm. Use the Letter paper size reference for dimensions, aliases, and neighboring formats. This guide covers the print workflow that keeps a Letter document at its intended physical size.
Letter is the default sheet for many North American printers, but a default is not a guarantee. Browser print dialogs, PDF viewers, office applications, and printer drivers can each apply their own page size or scaling rule.
Confirm the document is really Letter
Check the page size before printing. A file can be named
letter.pdf while its embedded page box is A4 or Legal.The source document should show:
- Width: 8.5 in
- Height: 11 in
- Orientation: Portrait or landscape as designed
If the document was created as A4, changing the printer tray to Letter does not convert the layout. It only forces the print system to resize or crop the A4 page.
Match all three print settings
Use the same size at every layer:
- Document or PDF page box: Letter
- Printer media or tray: Letter
- Scale: Actual size or 100%
This matters whenever the output contains ruled spacing, graph squares, labels, forms, fold marks, or hole-punch margins. A small automatic reduction can make a page look tidy while changing every physical measurement.
For ordinary reading copies, fitting may be acceptable. For anything users write on, measure, cut, or align, preserve actual size.
Avoid the A4 substitution
A4 is slightly narrower and taller than Letter. Many international applications and printers default to A4, while North American devices default to Letter.
If a Letter PDF is sent to an A4 tray, the software may reduce the width, add different margins, or clip side content. If an A4 PDF is sent to Letter, bottom content is more likely to move or shrink.
Do not solve a regional workflow by shipping one file and telling everyone to use Fit to page. Provide separate Letter and A4 versions when the layout matters. See A4 vs Letter for the selection decision.
Keep binder and hole-punch margins usable
Letter describes the sheet, not the safe writing area. A printer may leave a hardware margin, and a binder or hole punch needs additional space.
- Keep essential text away from the outer edge.
- Add a wider left margin for portrait pages that will be punched.
- Check the top margin for pages that will be bound or stapled.
- Do not center a measured grid after printing if the template depends on an intentional binding margin.
When a page will be copied repeatedly, use a conservative safe area. Copier drift and automatic feeder alignment can expose margins that looked fine on the first print.
Print a one-page scale check
Before printing a large batch:
- Choose Letter in the source application.
- Choose Letter in the printer driver.
- Turn off Fit, Shrink, and Scale to printable area.
- Print one page.
- For quarter-inch graph paper, measure ten cells from the center of the first line to the center of the eleventh. The span should be 2.5 inches (63.5 mm).
If ten quarter-inch cells do not span 2.5 inches, confirm that the file uses the intended grid pitch and that the print was not scaled. Recheck the PDF viewer and driver separately. Some operating-system dialogs hide advanced printer settings behind another button.
Copying, scanning, and mobile printing
Copiers often offer automatic paper detection. Confirm the detected tray before copying a measured original. A copier can enlarge a Letter sheet to A4 or reduce an A4 original to Letter without making the change obvious.
Scanners may crop to the visible ink rather than retain the full 8.5 x 11 page box. If the scan will become a reusable form, place it on a new Letter canvas and verify the final PDF dimensions.
Mobile print sheets usually expose fewer controls. For measured templates, export the PDF first and print from an application that shows both media size and scaling.
Troubleshooting
The page has unexpected white borders. The printer may not support borderless Letter printing. Use a safe-margin template rather than enlarging the page.
The output is slightly smaller. Disable fitting in both the application and driver. Measure a known grid or ruler mark to confirm.
The bottom moves to another page. The source document may be A4 or Legal, or the application may have repaginated after the size changed.
The printer asks for another tray. The document and driver media settings disagree. Set both to Letter before sending the job again.
