How to use a printable number line
Make counting and arithmetic visible with equal steps along a line. Choose a range that fits the lesson and keep the tick interval consistent.
Choose a range and tick interval
For early addition, use 0–10 with steps of 1. Use negative values or smaller intervals only when the learner needs them.
Show movement on the line
Point to the starting number. Draw one arc for each step, moving right for addition and left for subtraction.
Explain the landing point
Ask the learner to say where the jumps ended and write the matching calculation. Use another line for the next example.
Try this. Count the spaces between ticks, not the tick marks themselves. Equal tick spacing is what makes the model useful.
