How to use a coordinate plane with negative values

Use all four quadrants to practice signed ordered pairs, reflections and straight-line graphs. The origin is the starting point for every position.

Coordinate plane with blue points at negative and positive positions on y = x
Example in use. The points (−2, −2), (−1, −1), (1, 1) and (2, 2) appear on opposite sides of the origin. This is a usage illustration. Customize the sheet above before downloading.
  1. Check the scale and origin

Find the intersection of the axes and read the tick interval. Use the same unit scale on both axes for this example.

  2. Move horizontally, then vertically

The x value moves right when positive and left when negative. The y value moves up when positive and down when negative.

  3. Plot, label and compare

Mark the ordered pairs, then connect points when the exercise asks for a graph. Check the signs before deciding which quadrant contains a point.

Try this. Start with a first-quadrant sheet if the learner is still practicing positive coordinates.
