How to Print A4 Paper with Inch-Based Printer Settings
Set an A4 document to 8.27 x 11.69 inches, match the printer tray, and avoid scaling when an inch-based print dialog defaults to US Letter.

A4 is 210 x 297 mm, 21 x 29.7 cm, or about 8.27 x 11.69 inches. For the authoritative dimensions, aliases, and neighboring sizes, use the A4 paper size reference. This guide solves the next problem: getting an A4 document through an inch-based printer dialog without quietly turning it into Letter.
The mismatch matters most for graph paper, ruled sheets, planners, labels, forms, and any page where the printed spacing has to match the preview. A document can look correct on screen while the printer driver shrinks it, clips it, or moves it onto a different page box.
Enter A4 in an inch-based dialog
Use the built-in A4 preset whenever the application or printer driver provides one. A named preset is safer than typing rounded inch values because ISO A4 is defined in millimeters.
If the dialog only accepts inches, enter:
- Width: 8.27 in
- Height: 11.69 in
- Orientation: Portrait, unless the source file is landscape
For software that accepts more precision, use 8.2677 x 11.6929 in. Do not create the document as 8.5 x 11 and assume the print dialog will fix it later. That creates a Letter document, not an A4 document.
Make the file, tray, and scaling setting agree
Three settings control the result:
- The PDF or document page box must be A4.
- The printer tray or media setting must be A4.
- Scaling must be Actual size or 100% when physical spacing matters.
If one layer disagrees, the software has to choose between shrinking, cropping, or adding uneven margins. Plain text may survive that choice. A measured template will not.
The source application, PDF viewer, and printer driver can each hold a separate paper-size setting. In Acrobat, open Print and choose Size under Page Sizing & Handling, then select Actual size. As Adobe explains, content outside the printable area can still be cropped at this setting. Correct the paper or margins rather than shrinking a measured grid.
Why Letter defaults cause trouble
US Letter is 8.5 x 11 inches. It is slightly wider and shorter than A4. The difference is small in a thumbnail but large enough to affect bottom margins, table breaks, graph spacing, and cut marks.
When an A4 PDF is sent to a Letter tray, the printer may:
- shrink the whole page to fit the shorter sheet;
- clip content near the bottom;
- center the page with different side margins;
- ignore the application setting and use the driver default.
For documents shared across regions, provide separate A4 and Letter files. Naming them clearly, such as

Check a measured template before a full print run
Print one proof before making a classroom set or office batch.
- Choose A4 in the application and printer driver.
- Turn off Fit, Shrink oversized pages, and Scale to printable area.
- Print one page at 100%.
- Measure ten 5 mm cells from the center of the first line to the center of the eleventh; the span should be 50 mm.
- Check that borders and footer content remain inside the printable area.
Hardware margins still apply. A correct A4 page can lose edge content if a printer cannot print borderless. Use margins supported by the selected printer; 5 mm is a common starting point, not a guarantee for every device. Check the printer’s stated printable area before putting important marks near an edge.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The page prints smaller than expected. Look for a fit or shrink option in both the PDF viewer and printer driver. Set both to actual size.
The bottom is clipped. Confirm that the tray contains A4 rather than Letter. If the hardware cannot print the page margins, choose a template with a larger safe area instead of scaling the entire sheet.
The application keeps switching back to Letter. Change the page size in the source document before export, then create a new PDF. Changing only the printer dialog does not repair a Letter-sized PDF.
A 5 mm grid does not measure 5 mm. The page was scaled somewhere in the workflow. Recheck the PDF page box, printer media size, and scale setting.
