What Is College-Ruled Paper? Spacing, Margin, and Best Uses
College ruled paper uses about 7 mm line spacing—tighter than wide ruled—so older students fit more notes per page without shrinking handwriting.

College ruled (also called medium ruled in some product lines) is the default US loose-leaf and notebook format for middle school through college. Lines sit closer than wide ruled, so you get more rows per page while keeping letter size readable for standard ballpoint pens.
Retail packaging rarely prints exact millimeters, but college ruling is commonly near 9/32 inch (~7.1 mm) between baselines—tight enough for efficient notes, roomy enough that descenders rarely collide with the next line when you write at a typical size.
When college ruled wins
- Dense note-taking where page count matters (labs, seminars, vocabulary).
- Homework that must match teacher expectations for “notebook paper.”
- Older students who no longer need the taller lines of primary or wide ruling.
When to pick something else
- Large handwriting, early writers, or occupational therapy goals → wide ruled or primary lined.
- Ultra-compact handwriting or index-card style rows → narrow ruled if your program allows it.
Margins and binders
Many college-ruled sheets include a red or blue margin line about an inch from the left so three-ring holes do not eat your sentences. Printable templates mimic that layout so drafts line up with store-bought refills.
Printing college-ruled templates
For PDFs generated at exact ruling measurements, print at Actual size / 100% on Letter stock (US templates) so spacing matches what teachers demonstrate.
FAQ
Does college ruled always come with a margin line? Not always. Retail packs often include a left margin, but the margin is a separate feature from the ruling pitch. Printable templates may include it or leave it out depending on the template.
How does college ruled compare to wide ruled? College ruled uses 7.1mm spacing; wide ruled uses 8.7mm. The difference is about the width of a pencil eraser—small on paper, but noticeable after filling a full page.
