Format decision guide

Separate the legal-size sheet from the law-ruled layout

Two choices are combined in this download. The sheet is US Legal size, 8.5 × 14 inches; the writing layout uses black rules spaced 8.7 mm apart plus a left margin line. With 0.75-inch page margins, the template draws 37 horizontal rules and provides 36 writing bands. “Legal size” describes the page dimensions, while “law ruled” describes the writing pattern.

That distinction matters when instructions are precise. A request for legal-size paper does not automatically require a particular ruling, and a request for ruled drafting paper may still permit Letter size. Confirm the required sheet first, then choose line spacing for the way the document will be written and reviewed.

Useful space for drafting and markup

The 8.7 mm spacing leaves more vertical room than college or narrow ruling. It suits interview notes, contract outlines, deposition preparation, meeting minutes, and other drafts that may receive inserted words, proofreading marks, or a second ink color. The left rule reserves a clear cue area without imposing a full form.

Not a filing requirement by itself

This is a printable writing aid, not a claim about court or agency rules. Filing requirements can specify page size, margins, typography, electronic submission, or an official form. Use the template for handwritten preparation unless the receiving organization explicitly accepts this format for the final document.

Choose a shorter or denser page when

Letter or A4 is easier when the printer, binder, scanner, or recipient does not handle 14-inch sheets. College ruling fits more lines while preserving comfortable handwriting; narrow ruling prioritizes maximum capacity. Keep Legal size only when its extra page length serves the task or is specifically requested.

Questions about this exact format

Does legal-size paper automatically mean law ruled?
No. Legal size is 8.5 × 14 inches. Ruling is a separate layout choice. This template happens to combine that sheet size with 8.7 mm horizontal spacing and a left margin line.
Can this template replace an official legal form?
No. It is intended for notes and drafting. Check the court, agency, school, or office instructions for the required form, page setup, and submission method.
