Choose a scale before labeling a blank number line
The default landscape Letter sheet has five unlabeled lines. Each has ten equal intervals and eleven ticks: hiding labels does not remove the underlying 0–10, step-1 layout.
Work through the scale
For whole numbers, label the endpoints 0 and 10 and count one per interval. For tenths, the same ten intervals can represent 0 to 1. For eighths, change the editor range to 0–1 and the step to 0.125 first; the result needs eight intervals and nine ticks. Do not label the unchanged ten-interval line as eighths.
When to use another layout
Keep intermediate labels blank when the task tests scale choice or missing numbers. Use the labeled fraction template when the goal is adding fractions rather than constructing a scale. See the full worked guide.
Questions about this format
- Can I make eighths just by writing 0 and 1 at the ends?
Not on the unchanged default: ten intervals would make tenths. Set the range to 0–1 and the step to 0.125 first, then confirm nine ticks.
