Choose a grid with intent
Start with the relationship you need to draw, not just the square size. A general square grid is useful for handwriting, measurement, arithmetic, and layout. A coordinate grid adds axes and labels for graphing lessons. Specialty grids preserve a particular geometry so a printed page can support drafting, maps, games, stitch patterns, or technical data without forcing a regular square grid to do the wrong job.
Choose 1/4 inch, 1 inch, 5 mm, or 1 cm when the page needs an even field of cells. Inch grids fit US classroom and craft conventions, while metric grids make measuring, scale drawings, journaling, and science work easier to check. Use the lighter line tone for writing and the standard or bold weight when students must see the cells from a distance.
